Object detail

Description
A fitted jacket made in the mid 1800s. The jacket has a boned bodice and is handmade. The jacket is brown and beige with black pinstripes with purple seam trims on the base and cuffs with two purple covered buttons surrounded by black lace on both cuffs. The back is gathered to two covered buttons. There is no collar and the front is fastened by 16 eyelets with eight covered purple buttons, surrounded by black lace.

Donated by Mrs. E. Faulkner. The jacket belonged to her grandmother. Worn at her wedding. Henry Cheesman (born Maidstone, Kent) married Mona Hainsworth (born Luton, England) June 12th 1864. Her mother travelled to New Zealand aboard the 'Lancashire Witch' in 1865.
