Description
Slate fragments found at Ōtūmoetai Pā, Tauranga. On one side it has the lettering "Na te kaponga". The other side has uneven incuse lines across its width. Te Kaponga was a chief who is an ancestor of Ngāi Tamarāwaho of Judea and a signatory of the sale of Te Papa land to the CMS in 1839. Te Kaponga was forced to leave Ōtamataha Pā by the invading Ngāti Maru and went to live at Ōtūmoetai.
