Description
Sixty ceramic and four glass fragments found at Ōtūmoetai Pā, Tauranga.
0123/99/1 - Large portion of white ceramic ointment-type jar ("Holloway's") and description of efficacy of contents; decoration and lettering in black.
/2 - Curved fragment, edge of ceramic item; design and product similar to 0123/99/1. Scrolled ribbon pattern.
/3 - Part of edge of flattish ceramic item, possibly a plate, light navy blue pattern/white background/plain white reverse. Fleur-de-lis type pattern. Same pattern as 0123/99/4, /5.
/4 - Fragment from edge of flattish ceramic item (?plate); design in blue on white. Fleur-de-lis type pattern. Same pattern as 0123/99/3 and /5.
/5 - Edge fragment from flattish ceramic piece (?plate). Fleur-de-lis type, perhaps arcanthus leaves, pattern is blue on white. Same pattern as 0123/99/3 and /4.
/6 - Fragment - appears to be handle of ceramic object. Smuged blue Greek key pattern on white ground. Wider end of /6 fits narrow end of /7.
/7 - Section of ceramic handle fitting below /6. Continuation of pattern across break; pattern is blue on white ground. Leaf design adjacent to Greek key pattern.
Wider end fits narrow end of /6.
/8 - Fragment of base of piece of white, glazed pottery (?bowl).
/9 - Fragment comprising base and side of glazed white crockery container. Base with dished depression so jar stands of edges of its base.
/10 - Base fragment of glazed, previously white, cylindrical crockery container; now extensively crazed with fine black lines. Base dished inward.
/11 - Triangular, "bent" fragment of white glazed crockery with dark blue pattern on convex surface. Reverse is plain. Portions of same pattern also on /12.
/12 - Four sided fragment of glazed white crockery with dark blue pattern (looped design and ?arcantus leaf). Portions of same pattern on /11.
/13 - Glazed white crockery fragment, possibly handle; two fluted areas on one side.
/14 - Edge fragment of flattish (?side) plate of glazed white ceramic; crazed.
/15 - Chunky fragment of white glazed crockery; some wear showing as though this is base of item.
/16 - Five-sided fragment of glazed white crockery; curved ridge to one side.
/17 - A four-sided fragment of glazed white crockery; palm pattern in blue on one side; reverse plain white.
/18 - Four-sided glazed white crockery fragment; plain on one side, portion of rectangular stamp ("Grindley") in green occupying most of reverse.
/19 - Almost flat fragment of glazed white crockery - ?plate.
/20 - Ceramic glazed white, five-sided fragment.
/21 - Cruved, white glazed ceramic.
/22 - Approximately triangular ceramic fragment with semi-circular ridge (as on base of saucer) on one side.
/23 - Four-sided piece of white glazed ceramic having smooth curved surface on one side, curved ridge (as on saucer base) on reverse.
/24 - Triangularly shaped edge piece of white glazed ceramic; flattish as though part of a plate.
/25 - Triangular shaped ceramic fragment, apparently from top or open edge of a ceramic piece. Glazed, rolled edge; part of pattern of three fern or palm fronds in black on blue-white background.
/26 - Amost triangular fragment - ?plate - showing blue Willow pattern.
/27 - Roughly trangular, wavy edged fragment of glazed crockery; pale blue repeated pattern.
/28 - Approximately rectangular glazed white crockery fragment with pale blue pattery and several finely crazed areas.
/29 - Thin porcelain fragment, white on reverse. Shading on obverse from pale grey-blue (edge) to deeper blue, possibly with two grey bands toward fragment point.
/30 - Curved, four-sided crockery fragment. Glazed inner surface, white with fine ridges running length of piece. Outer surface with glazed, blue painted scene of tree against hills.
/31 - Five-sided glazed white crockery fragment, possibly saucer, showing alternating lime-green/silver stripes on one side; reverse plain.
/32 - Curved, roughly rectangular piece of off-white, glazed crockery; coloured flower design on obverse, plain reverse.
/33 - Glazed white four-sided crockery fragment with pale blue irregular pattern covering one side.
/34 - Black patterned, four-sided glazed white pottery fragment; flower pattern has concentric stripes at edge.
/35 - Roughly triangulary shaped fragment of glazed white crockery; shows very small part of a blue pattern at longest point.
/36 - A seven-sided fragment of glazed white crockery; one side white with portion of circular ridge, other side has blue pattern of two blue bands/stripes near the fragment edge, with tree-like pattern and part of bird wing.
/37 - Fragment, three-sided, of glazed white crockery; has blue ?leafy pattern on obverse; reverse is plain.
/38 - Thick fragment of glazed white crockery; has pale blue pattern on one side and is plain on the other.
/39 - Glazed white crockery fragment having four sides. Grey discolouration beneath glaze, mainly on one side.
/40 - Four-sided edge section of glazed white crockery; has a blue pattern on both sides.
/41 - A four-sided fragment of white glazed crockery, having pale blue ?leafy pattern on one side only.
/42 - Irregularly shaped fragment of glazed, off-white crockery with brown patterns on both sides. Flower design on one side; leaves on the other.
/43 - Glazed white crockery fragment with four sides. Has a mid-blue stripe design on one side; black cracks to both surfaces.
/44 - A glazed white crockery fragment with three sides. There is a blue pattern on the obverse; the reverse is plain.
/45 - A four-sided fragment of glazed white crockery. Maker's stamp in black; reverse plain.
/46 - Triangular piece of thin, glazed crockery; slightly curved gold stripe on one side.
/47 - Fragment of glazed white crockery, four-sided; blue pattern (arching leaves or branches?) on both surfaces.
/48 - Fragment, roughly triangular shaped, of pale blue crockery. Has bird design in pale blue on one side; reverse is plain but with curved ridge (as underside of saucer).
/49 - White crockery, glazed, fragment with blue pattern on one side only.
/50 - A three-sided fragment of glazed white crockery with blue pattern on one side only. Two sides almost straight, the other is curved.
/51 - A white glazed crockery fragment with five sides; crazed glaze both sides.
/52 - Off-white glazed crockery fragment; four sides; blue pattern near the rounded edge of one side.
/53 - Glazed white crockery fragment of four sides, having black pattern on obverse.
/54 - Thin crockery fragment, curved and four-sided. Part of a handle and a blue pattern on one side. Possibly a tea cup.
/55 - Angled, five-sided fragment of glazed white crockery with a blue pattern on one surface, part of which has a rounded edge.
/56 - A glazed white crockery fragment with a pale blue pattern on one side.
/57 - Triangularly shaped fragment of glazed off-white crockery; one surface with blue pattern.
/58 - Chunky base fragment of glazed white crockery, having a blue pattern of trees and the gables of buildings. Other side is plain with rim of base.
/59 - Fragment of circular base of glazed, greyish crockery - possibly base of eggcup.
/60 - Glass fragment, blue. Outer (convex) surface dully frosted, inner (concave) both shiny and dull.
/61 - Triangular fragment of milky white translucent glass with parts of several circular lips/ridges on one side.
/62 - Fragment of milky white glass with curved, rounded edge and two fractured sides.
/63 - Milky white glass fragment, five-sided and translucent. Side view shows steps in the levels of both sides.
/64 - Slightly curved fragment of glazed white crockery, semi-eliptical in cross-section. May be part of a handle - teacup?
