Object detail

Description
Me te kotea mau kupenga.
Like the post to which the net is attached.

Carved māhē, stone sinker. Circular in shape with central hole. The edges are incised with carving, through a series of 3 oblong rings and one end resembling a manaia head form. Sinker stones with individual marks are unique to the Bay of Plenty. While each stone is similar in size and type, the differing designs help the owner identify their net. Found on the Ōtūmoetai foreshore in the proximity of the Ōtūmoetai Pā.
