Description
Watercolour of Chief Hori Ngatai by Horatio Gordon Robley (1840-1930). Chief Hori Ngatai was a rangatira of Ngaiterangi. He and his followers fought at Meremere on the Waikato River and at Otau (Wairoa South) in 1863. In the following year he was one of the defenders at Pukehinahina and was subsequently a Ngaiterangi spokesman at the surrender on 25 July 1864 at Te Papa. Part of the Adams Collection. John Cuthbert was an acquaintance and friend of Robley and they wrote to each other until his death.
