Description
A corduroy field jacket with leather plaited buttons and four front pockets. Worn by Lt Robert Hazelton Sheppard on service in the Boer War. Sheppard was born in Ireland in 1855 and died in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1945.

"Robert Hazelton Sheppard was born on the 10 April 1855 in Armagh, Northern Ireland. He was a linen and cambric manufacturer in Ireland. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1878. He enlisted with the Armed Constabulary on 10 February 1880 as a constable. He was promoted to Sergeant 3rd Class on 16 June 1882. He was promoted to Sergeant 1st Class on 19th April 1885. He became part of the Permanent Militia on 18 September as a Sergeant. He enlisted for the Boer War on 19 March 1902 as a Lieutenant with the North Island Battalion, 9th contingent. He went to England as part of the Coronation Contingent in 1902. He was discharged on 31 May 1911 having completed 31 years 110 days of continuous Armed Forces Service. He died in Auckland on the 28th of June 1945. He married in 1885 and had 4 children, both sons' served in World War One. He is my great grandfather." Sharon Cornwall
