Description
A cardboard box covered with white embossed paper, which contained 10 packets of sewing needles. Outside lid label reads "Ne Plus Ultra Short Whites. Quarter Pound. London". Royal Crest is in the centre. Top proper left, Rv "624". Inside lid cardboard is blue and handwriting "11 packets of sewing needles brought from (HStilleto) London in 1853 by the Saxons lent by Mrs Athol Whitwell". Inside base cardboard is blue. Outer sides sellotaped in two corners. Brown paper glued on bottom of base. Handwriting "lent by Mrs Athol Whitwell, 624". "623" has been written and then crossed out.
/1 - Folded brown paper packet with two needles. H31mmxW19mm. White label reads, "Abel Morrall's Burnished Egg Eyed Betws". Green label reads, "Manufactured by Abel Morrall, priory mills Studley Warwickshire".
/2 - Folded Brown paper packet with 13 needles. H35mmxH15mm. White label reads, "Queens needles made by J Hardwidge needle maker to her late Majesty (Queen Charlotte) Long Lane Southwark Drll'd Eyes".
/3 Folded brown paper packet with 10 needles. H40xW19mm. White label reads, "Wells & Cos Grooveless Patent, Drilled Ey'd Sharpes No 7".
/4 - Folded brown paper packet with 6 needles. H23mmxW11mm. Blue, gold and white label reads "W.Vale and Sons, Locomotive, Grooveless Eyed Betws. No.9".
/5 - Folded brown paper packet with three needles H35mmxW17mm. Red label reads "Kirkby's London Ne Plus Ultra Needles No.9 Diamond Drill'd Eyed Glovers. Gold label reads "None are genuine but those bearing Kirby Beard & Co the name of the company in full".
/6 - Folded brown paper packet, which is empty. H51mmxW17mm. Front white label reads "Abel Morrall's 1 Burnished, Egg eyed Sharps". Inside green label reads "Manufactured & Warranted by Abel Morrall Priory Mills, Studley Warwickshire".
/7 - Folded brown paper packet with 27 needles. H.47xW22mm. White, gold and brown label reads "W.Vale & Sons locomotive grooveless eyed sharps No.5". "624" written in blue pen on label.
/8 - Folded brown paper packet with 17 needles. H35mmxW18mm. Front white and gold label reads, "Wells & Cos Grooveless Patent Drilled Ey'd Sharps No 8". Handwritten inside "624".
/9 - Folded brown paper packet with 18 needles. H36mmx17mm. Rips to corners, an area where the top layer of the paper has been removed "624" written on the outside.
/10 - folded brown paper packet with 25 needles. H 37mmx22mm. Blue and white outside label reads "H.Milward and Sons, Extra Quality Betweens 7". White and gold outside label reads "London 1862". "624" inside blue and gold label reads "Green and Son High St Exeter".
