Description
A bible with dark brown leather cover that has a blind stamped border and ribbed spine. At top of spine is Gold inlay 'Holy Bible'. Title page reads 'The Holy Bible, containing the old and new testaments, translated out of the orginal tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised by his majesty's special command." Handwritten in pencil at bottom of page '1858' and '1567 pages'. Inside back cover handwritten in black ink 'this bible was a passenger by the illfated ship "Hinburgh" which was burned shortly after her arrival at Port Chalmers. Deeply regretted by a large circle of friends'. Four items were found with bible and were packed separately 10/10/06.
/1 Letter from I W Matthews, donor, gifting bible to the District Museum. In it they state that they think the bible came to New Zealand 'in a sailing ship with my mother'. Letter is typed and signed by I W Matthews. Dated 25 September 1976.
/2 Leter to the editor discussing Agnosticism.
/3 Newspaper clipping of poem entitled 'Have Courage to say No'. Poem urges young men to avoid evils of city living, fast women, billiard saloons, drink, gambling halls. On reverse is advertisement for Nursery and Seeaman, G Matthews, Dunedin.
/4 Notepad paper with details of bible written down.
