Description
An unmounted velox vernacular print showing a one story building, part mock Tudor style with corrugated iron roof, part with tile roof. White picket fence in front. Sand in foreground. Pencilled on reverse "Howard's Hotel Mount Maunganui, burnt down." In ink "Courtnay's store further along". Also known as The Lodge it was a private guest house run by Mr Howard. The Oceanside Hotel was built on the site and more recently the Oceanside Twin Towers on the cnr of Adams Ave and Marine Parade.

'Hotel destroyed. Fire at Mt. Maunganui. Owner's Heavy Loss. A Fire occured at Mount Maunganui shortly after one o'clock this morning, when the Ocean Lodge Private Hotel, owned by Mr. W. H. Howard, was destroyed, only a new building adjoining being saved' 'Bay of Plenty Times', 26 August 1930.
