Description
An unmounted deckle-edged print showing a motor garage, one story, with two wide doors. Petrol pumps in forecourt. Advertising sign ' Vacuum PLUME'. Part of building on right is an office. Pine trees at rear of building and Mauao in background. Written on reverse "Bank's Garage cr Banks and Main Roads. Bank of NZ on right open once a week. 1937. Millers Print, Auckland".

Edward Cedric Banks (1908-1988) was a major land owner at Mount Maunganui from the 1930s. He was elected a Commissioner of the Mount Maunganui Town Board in 1932 and defeated at the 1934 election. In 1939 he married Marjory Alice Hunt and they had a daughter in 1946. The garage was run by the Taylor Brothers who later opened another garage on the corner of Victoria Road and Salisbury Avenue. Bill Ebdale, a champion surfer in the 1960s was also the garage proprietor. (Researched by Shirley Arabin, Collection volunteer, 2022).
