A mounted portrait of officer in uniform, seated. Handwritten on reverse "Capt A. F. Tunks WW1 . Relieved at Masterton 16-7-17. Lifelong friend of C. A. Crabbe. Given by Vi Simons. Photographer R. Meers, Photo, Tauranga."
Alfred Tunks was born in Tauranga in 1870. At the time this photograph was taken he would have been in his mid-forties. Tunks enlisted in January 1916 and served overseas. He was discharged in New Zealand in June 1917. Tunks was the first Tauranga born Mayor from May 1933 to May 1935. He died 21 September 1936.
