Description
A mounted print showing a view of the Commercial Hotel, The Strand, Tauranga. Built 1876 by Joseph Ellis the first proprietor. Destroyed in a fire, 12 November 1916. A two storied weatherboard building with balcony verandah. Foreground shows rough ground going down to beach so pre dates the first sea wall. Loaded waggons drawn by horses on street. Several men, one with dog, on footpath and balcony. Building to south of hotel has sign "A.1863.D." on facade. Another sign visible reads T.S. Duncanson, Stationery, Fancy ... Tobacco, Toys and Crockery". One story building on north side sign on window 'Dental Institute'. On reverse "This was prior to 1917, possibly 1900 (fire in 1916) This block burned from Wharf Street including first Commercial Hotel. Holly Griffiths low sprung cart and white horse".
