Description
An unmounted print showing the Tauranga Hotel on fire, The Strand. The Tauranga Fire Brigade Thornycroft Fire engine with hoses and men helping. Adjacent shops appear to be in danger of burning. Appears to be a fresh fish shop on ground floor of hotel building. One man by pole waving. Handwritten on reverse 'Tauranga Hotel Burns!' Headlines in 'The Bay of Plenty Times', 17 February 1936, "Destructive Fire On Strand. Tauranga Hotel and Five Shops Reduced to Ruins Within an Hour. Old Two-Storied Block Burns Fiercely. Brigades Hopeless Task. Desperate Fight Saves Adjoining Shops. Loss Estimated at 12,000 pounds".
