An unmounted print showing a view of a fire on The Strand, Tauranga. Smoke covers most of Tauranga Hotel. Fireman entering door of shop. 'Tauranga ...' with lower sign 'Fresh Fish daily' visible. Roofing iron lies on street. Handwritten on reverse "Tauranga Hotel 1936 burnt". Headlines in 'The Bay of Plenty Times', 17 February 1936, "Destructive Fire On Strand. Tauranga Hotel and Five Shops Reduced to Ruins Within an Hour. Old Two-Storied Block Burns Fiercely. Brigades Hopeless Task. Desperate Fight Saves Adjoining Shops. Loss Estimated at 12,000 pounds".
