Description
An unmounted deckle edged print showing the Tauranga Hotel burning with smoke billowing up. Photograph taken from behind a crowd of people standing on The Strand. Handwritten on reverse "Tga Hotel fire 1936". Headlines in 'The Bay of Plenty Times', 17 February 1936, "Destructive Fire On Strand. Tauranga Hotel and Five Shops Reduced to Ruins Within an Hour. Old Two-Storied Block Burns Fiercely. Brigades Hopeless Task. Desperate Fight Saves Adjoining Shops. Loss Estimated at 12,000 pounds".
