Description
An unmounted print showing a view of the Matapihi Rail Bridge under construction. The Tauranga end of bridge is visible showing one of the piles and other framework and scaffold with man standing on the end. Barge in foreground . Town wharf, Monmouth Redoubt and Mission Cemetery visible with Mauao in the background. On reverse "Tauranga side of Railway Bridge (under construction) There is a hot spring somehwere near here. The workmen discovered the water was hot when ... the piles". In December 1916 this Meers photograph was printed in the 'Auckland Weekly News' with the following caption, "Progress of the Auckland East Coast Railway Scheme: The first piles driven of the Railway Ferro-concrete bridge to be erected over the Tauranga Harbour. To link up Tauranga with Opotiki and Whakatane".
