Description
A scarlet, conventionally named pink, hunting coat made of cotton velveteen. Brass buttons carrying the initials "SWH" (South Wold Hunt). The bodice is deeply cut away and covers only the arms and chest, not the stomach. High collar in the same fabric. The tails have been cut off.

This hunting coat was donated to the collection by the Mansel family who arrived in Tauranga in 1884 and were well known for their ownership of a grand house on the land known as Yatton Estate, a small part of which is now Yatton Park. This coat is believed to date from the early1800s and to have belonged to Captain Mansel who was a member of the British Royal Navy. Hunting was an important sporting and social activity for many Tauranga residents and a hunt club was established here in the 1890s.
