Description
A large format unmounted black & white print of Maungawhare, a two storey weatherboard house with a corrugated iron roof. Registered with Heritage New Zealand as a Category 2 home. Verandahs on two sides of house with elaborate detail of pierced wood on double poles. Black marks on board below spouting are hooks for canvas hangings that the original family used when they slept on the verandahs in the summer. Verandah floor is concrete and steps lead to lawn. Gables on roof have finials and there are dormer windows. Several brick chimneys. Mature trees in background. House designed by Isaac Vialou architect, later of Hamilton, built for Henry Stainforth Brabant on his farm in 1878. When his family outgrew this house he built Woodhill. Handwritten on reverse 'Photograph taken and donated by R D Hyde.'
