Description
A mounted black and white print showing John Gilmore's store 'The Exchange', corner Cameron Road and Elizabeth Street, Tauranga. The Exchange was an L shaped weatherboad building with shop and accommodation. Goods are on view in the windows and the sign above the door reads 'EXCHANGE 1880'. The entrance is distinctive as is on the corner of the building. On Cameron Road wall is the sign 'J. Gilmore General Store'. A buggy or gig with horse stands near the door. There does not appear to be any formed footpath and ground slopes roughly to the road. John Gilmore died in 1921 and the family used The Exchange as accommodation until 1972. The building was later moved to the Tauranga Historic Village in 17th Ave. Handwritten on reverse 'Gilmore's Store Tauranga cnr Cameron Road and Elizabeth Street'.
