Description
Postcard showing a group of people at the turning of the first sod for the railway, The Strand Tauranga. Some of the people have been named in blue pen including Canon Jordan, Herries, Sir Roderick McKensie, Mr Munro, Capt. Leach. Handwriting on reverse says - "Turning of first sod in East Coast Railway by Sir Roderick McKenzie about 1908. Col. Ward presenting silver spoon, Canon Jordan behind him". This date is incorrect as the Bay of Plenty Times reported on the event 13 April 1910.
