Description
A one sheet newspaper with four printed pages originally folded in the centre. The masthead reads 'The Little Un' 'No.11. Vol.1. December 17 1884. Price 1 Half-penny'. The content includes advertisement for 'T.W Rhodes, The Strand, Tauranga', 'Henry C Hoyte, Chemist, Wharf Street' 'Joseph Salt, Smith', 'D. Lundon, Timber Importer' and others. Also included are wanted ads, a death notice for 'The late Mrs Kitchen' and general local and national news, as well as shipping news.
In December of 1884 T. W. Rhodes, a book seller on the corner of Hamilton Street and The Strand, began publishing 'The Little Un'. His aim, as expressed in the first edition, was to publish an ‘independent journal bound to no party, or clique, in which freely to discuss matters of public interest’. Rhodes printed 'The Little Un' on a press from his Strand premises, which was the original office of 'The Bay of Plenty Times'.
'The Little Un' continued for five months after which Rhodes began publishing 'The Evening News' and 'East Coast Advertiser'. In 1888 Rhodes left Tauranga for the Coromandel with the intention of publishing a newspaper there.
