Description
A sepia print of the “Darby Digger”. A large machine like a traction engine with implement at rear that penetrates the ground. Nine men standing by the digger with sign that reads “TA & SC Darby’s Patent. The Darby Land Digger Syndicate”. On reverse is written T.C. Darby (the inventor) in straw hat sitting down. J.W. Moss in straw hat standing. Stamp reads 'Howard Denham, Willesden Green, London N.W.'
The Darby Steam Digger a light traction engine was invented circa 1879 by farmer Thomas Darby and built at Lodge Farm Pleshey, near Chelmsford in Essex, England. Robert Hasler helped to build this first prototype. The donor's husband's father was friends with the inventors.
