Description
A pair of WW1 medals and a memorial plaque, also known as a Dead Man's Penny, for Private John Ellison 38368.
/1 Victory Medal - circular copper medal lacquered in bronze. Obverse shows figure of 'Victory'. Reverse has the words 'THE GREAT/WAR FOR/CIVILISATION/1914-1919'
/2 British War Medal - circular silver medal, King George V effigy with writing GEORGIVS V BRITT:OMN:REX ET IND:IMP on one side with St George naked on horseback with dates 1914-1918. Around the rim is '38368 Pte. J Ellison NZEF'.
/3 Death Plaque - Circular bronze plaque - HE DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR 'John Ellison'.

Private John Ellison 38368 was born in England in 1881. He travelled to New Zealand in 1906 (according to his calculations). At the time of enlistment he was a bushman for Simmonds Tauranga Ltd and was living at Omanawa Falls, Tauranga. He married Florence Jane Elizabeth Lilley in Tauranga on the 3/1/1917 a few weeks prior to departing to Wellington and then the Western Front. He was Killed in action on the 26th or 27th of March 1918 at Mailly-maillet, France. These items were sent to his wife Mrs F. Ellison at Omanawa Falls Tauranga.
