Description
A black and white print showing a view of the mainstreet in Karangahake. The street appears to be on two levels. A two-storied building with balcony and a number of other buildings can be seen. What has been identified as a funeral procession is watched by a large crowd. Handwritten in pencil and pen on reverse 'Mr B. Gwilliam', '(Miner's Funeral) Karangahake'.
Research by Ron Melvin suggests that this photograph is of the Angus McColl and Frederick Middleton double funeral on Wednesday 9 December 1903. "This afternoon a sensational mining accident occurred at Karangahake. Two men, Middleton and McColl, engaged in a shaft of the Crown mine, were killed outright. The men were working in hte bottom of the shaft, when a truch of quartz from the upper level crashed on top of them." Gisborne Times, 8 December 1903.
