Description
A black and white slide of the fountain in Memorial Park, Tauranga. Construction of the fountain began in 1962 and was initiated by Tauranga Jaycees. It was reported that on completion the fountain would contain 300 water jets. "It has been built by voluntary labour of Tauranga's Jaycee members who have worked 5000 hours on the project and given up their leisure hours over 27 weekends. A great asset to the park, the fountain has already attracted thousands of spectators, especially after dark when its constantly changing colours and varying patterns of play can be seen to the best advantage. An almost limitless combination of effects is provided by 12 jet formations and 8 different light changes." Tauranga Photo News, 2 February 1963.
The Tauranga Heritage Collection has more than 2000 photographic slides taken by Robert Gale. Robert and his family moved to Tauranga in the early 1960s and he taught at Merivale School until retirement. Robert was a member of the Tauranga Photographic Society for many years.
