Description
A colour slide showing an event at the Gate Pa Reserve, Tauranga. St George Anglican Church in the background. Event has been identified as being part of the Battle of Pukehinahina Gate Pa Centenary. Recorded by photographer as ‘Rev. Stevens at Gate Pa Memorial’. "On April 29th - one hundred years after the battle between Maori and British forces - a crowd of approximately 2000 gathered on the site to witness the unveiling of a memorial to the fallen of both races by the Chief Justice and acting Governor of New Zealand, the Rt Hon Sir Harold Barrowclough." Robert and his family moved to Tauranga in the early 1960s and he taught at Merivale School until retirement. Robert was a member of the Tauranga Photographic Society for many years.
