Description
A black and white slide showing a large pipe in a trench. The Tauranga harbour is in the background. Recorded by photographer as ‘Triangle excavation’. This is the area where Devonport Road, The Strand and Spring Street met. "Welcomed with relief by many of Tauranga's business houses, the new stormwater drain to alleviate Strand flooding has been partly laid this month and the work is progressing rapidly. For some years, any exceptional fall of rain has resulted in the flooding, sometimes extensively, of shops and hotels. The new drain should provide an easy get-away for the water." Tauranga Photo News, 27 April 1963.

The Tauranga Heritage Collection has more than 2000 photographic slides taken by Robert Gale. Robert and his family moved to Tauranga in the early 1960s and he taught at Merivale School until retirement. Robert was a member of the Tauranga Photographic Society for many years.
