Description
A colour slide showing a formal occasion with a speaker and dignitaries sitting behind. Identified as the official opening of the Tauranga airport – sealed runway. Walsh (M.P.), Harris (Mayor), Thomson (Minister Transport). "A flying field at Mount Maunganui was first operated in 1937 by Tauranga Borough Council with assistance from the Ministry of Works and it was used extensively during the war by the RNZAF for training personnel. Since the war, improvements have been made until, last month, an official opening ceremony was held to mark the completion of a sealed runway and first stage of a passenger terminal." 4 May 1968, Bay of Plenty Photo News

The Tauranga Heritage Collection has more than 2000 photographic slides taken by Robert Gale. Robert and his family moved to Tauranga in the early 1960s and he taught at Merivale School until retirement. Robert was a member of the Tauranga Photographic Society for many years.
