Description
A colour slide showing two elephants’ side by side walking down The Strand, Tauranga. The elephants are walking past Hartley’s drapery store. Recorded by photographer as ‘Elephant race. The Strand’. "One of the highlights of the recent visit of Bullens circus was a thrilling elephant race from the Tauranga Hotel to 1ZD radio station in Spring Street. The elephants proved that, even at a trot, they are surprisingly fast-moving animals and we had a hard job to keep up with them! Gaily attired for the occasion, they were ridden by 1ZD's John Forster (the winner), announcer John May and Nigel Lester.' Photo News, 2 February 1963.
