Description
A colour slide showing a large three story wooden building. A sign above a door reads "The Empire, Private Hotel". Other signs include "War Assets and Surplus Stocks, Ladies and Gents Hairdressing, B.H. Humphrey Real Estate Agent". Recorded by the photographer as "Old Empire Hotel Rotorua". The Empire Private Hotel was located at the southern end of Tutanekai Street in Rotorua and was built in 1907. It was still operating as a hotel when this photograph was taken, 1962, but clearly had seen better days. A year later it was sold and in 1965 it was demolished to make way for an electrical store.
The Tauranga Heritage Collection has more than 2000 photographic slides taken by Robert Gale. Robert and his family moved to Tauranga in the early 1960s and he taught at Merivale School until retirement. Robert was a member of the Tauranga Photographic Society for many years.
