Description
A vernacular sepia print showing a view of a covered outdoor workshop with boat taking shape. Annotation reads 'First planks in place. Planks were cut to shape, with some up to 30ft long. Their shape determined the ultimate form of the hull - including the flare of the bow and the tumble-home of the stern.'

One of eighty-five photographic copy prints showing the construction of a boat identified as 'Lady Karen'. The photographs were taken by David Murrell who lived with boat builder Willie Oliver and his family in Judea, Tauranga, in 1956-1957. The annotations that accompany the images were made by John Oliver and David Murrell in 2013 and were compiled by Anne Murrell. The 'Lady Karen' was a single skin, kauri planked launch. 38/39ft in length. 11ft 6ins beam.
