Description
A vernacular sepia print showing a view of a covered outdoor workshop with boat taking shape. A man is standing beside the boat. Annotation reads 'Outside the shed, water was heated in a covered copper. Steam was piped into the rectangular steam box (approximately 20ft long) to heat the ribs so they could be bent into shape'.

One of eighty-five photographic copy prints showing the construction of a boat identified as 'Lady Karen'. The photographs were taken by David Murrell who lived with boat builder Willie Oliver and his family in Judea, Tauranga, in 1956-1957. The annotations that accompany the images were made by John Oliver and David Murrell in 2013 and were compiled by Anne Murrell. The 'Lady Karen' was a single skin, kauri planked launch. 38/39ft in length. 11ft 6ins beam.
