Description
A black and white photograph showing a crowd of people standing near the edge of the pool watching the swimmers who include men and children. The pool has been identified as the Katikati Springs.

Everard Francis Buckworth and his sons discovered a hot spring at Rereakahia in 1896. He developed the spring and an enclosed ladies’ bath. The Katikati Domain Board took it over when it had become run down and established Hot Springs Reserve and the image is probably the opening of the new pool. It later became known as the Sapphire Springs. Judging by the style of clothes, especially hats in the crowds an estimate of the date would be 1920s.
