Description
A colourised photographic print of mountains with water and trees in the foreground. Printed on the image at the bottom left is '11558 Mitre Peak Milford Sound'. Mitre Peak is the best known feature of Milford Sound appearing on stamps, posters, postcards and illustrating all manner of tourist publicity. Visitors to Milford can experience the water cascading down the steep sides of the Peak as the tourist boats motor slowly very close to the cliffs. The other peaks in the region are visible to the left of the main feature. The southern beech trees in the foreground are the typical vegetation of the area.

This image was taken for the production of postcards by the Detroit Publishing Company. The photochrom process allowed black and white negatives to be realistically colourised through the lithography printing process. The image was transferred to stones, one for each colour up to eleven. They produced a great variety of postcards with sales of seven million one year. The colourising process was renamed photostint and the company closed in 1932.
