Object detail

Description
White lawn and cotton christening gown. The bodice is made of lawn and has cap sleeves with eyelet embroidery on the shoulder. The front bodice is v shaped with eyelet embroidery. There is a flap on either side of this which has been joined with entredeux. The gown has a tape drawstring at the waist and neck. There are no buttons or studs. The back of the bodice is plain. The skirt is made of cotton. The front of the skirt has two flaps running in an inverted v shape form the bodice to the hem. There are three sets of five pintucks interspersed with two panels of eyelet embroidery (in a cobweb design) which goes right around the skirt. There is a plain frill around the hem.

At time of donation (1981) it was recorded by the donor that this gown was 120 years old. This would date the gown to the early 1860s.
