Description
The sampler is in a glaze gilt frame and is composed of silk threads on silk fabric with colours of red, green, blue and beige. The sampler exhibits different weaves in darning arranged in crosses around the border with three across the top and bottom by four down the sides. The sampler has a central motif of fruit in a basket also worked in darning. Paper crosses are tacked behind the central motifs at the top and bottom to emphasise the plain darn. There is a fine stitched hem on all four sides. The sampler is backed with heavy paper and tacked to a wooden stretcher. It is signed at the bottom 'Sarah Cooper 1799'. The sampler is described by a textiles conservator as being 'a particularly fine darning sampler and comparatively rare in New Zealand.'
